Last week, Communications Week 2015 came to a close with its highly anticipated Friday Morning Sessions event. The three expert panel sessions provided key lessons for optimizing your business social media strategy, and below are our top three takeaways from the event:
- Identify your audience and speak their language
Identifying your brand’s audience in the social space is the first step toward making sure your messaging reaches the right people. Once you know who your target audience is, you will be well on your way to more fruitful interactions. Key tips for interacting with your target audience include talking “with” them and not “at” them, and ensuring that the things you post blend seamlessly and organically into their feeds as opposed to popping up like obnoxious advertisements.
- Choose your brand’s narrative and stay true to your voice
It’s much easier to achieve success in the social space if you choose a brand narrative and voice, and stick to it. The more cohesive, reliable, and true to itself your messaging is, the more your audience members will believe in your brand, support it, trust it and relate to it. So make sure your brand has an unwavering personality across all its platforms, and avoid posting content that may seem out of character.
- Select your platforms wisely
When it comes to social media for your brand, you don’t have to be active on every platform. However, you should make sure that the platforms you are engaging on both resonate with your brand’s narrative, and are the platforms on which your target audience members are interacting. Using discretion when choosing platforms can help give credibility to your brand’s personality and generate better results while using fewer resources.
By following these three steps, your brand can put its best foot forward on social media. Social will continue to be a critical marketing tool, so it’s important to set your business up for long-term success before jumping in.
If you attended Communications Week, what were your key takeaways? If you didn’t, we hope to see you there next year!
